Hunt The Saxons 2005 Small Finds

What are small finds?

Small finds are artefacts (whole or fragments) which are useful in being able to provide dating evidence, and information about the activities carried out in the past at a particular location. The evidence can indicate social or economic status of a particular site.

What finds did we include?

The type of items we included were coins, bottles, tokens, buttons, brooches, beads, buckles, pins, weights, and a whole host of other things that held the potential to be able to provide dating and / or other useful information.

We excluded pottery, CBM (ceramic building material), bone, (with one exception) shell, coal/coke, window glass etc as these were dealt with separately.

How did we find them?

The finds were found by one of three methods:

  1. Found by the diggers while trowelling
  2. Found by the finds people while sieving
  3. Found during metal detecting of the spoil heap
Doll Figure, Buckle and Thimble

How many small finds did we find?

We found fifty seven small finds. However, after reviewing these we re-categorised seven, leaving a total of fifty. The small finds distribution graph shows how these finds were distributed between the eleven test pits.
